Finding The Burls The hunt is always on to find burls whether it be black walnut, myrtle, madrone, redwood, buckeye, eucaliptis, or maple. Some are found in residential areas and others, like the walnut, in orchards.
Most are visible and grow slightly above the ground and can be seen from a distance. The bulk of the rounded 2,000 lb. burl is below the ground. Most burls are found in California and some in Oregon. A few burls can be found on trees in the south, but these are above the ground and are caused by injuries to the trees.
This is how a typical walnut burl looks in the ground. Notice the tight orange peel looking bark on the burl.
Digging Out The Burls Once the tree is purchases, we use a backhoe to dig the burl out. As the roots are exposed, we can use a chainsaw with a carbide chain to cut away the roots about 3 feet above the burl into the English Walnut. This is done for two reasons. One: the upper part may product very high quality wood used in gunstocks. Two: the truck provides a place to grab the burl as it it lifted out of the 6 ft. deep hole. The roots are sometimes used for gunstock blanks. The burl pictured here weighed nearly 2,000 lbs.
Removed Burls Bill Warren (left) with buyer's son, Jimmy, standing with grade A 2,100 lb. burl. Bill received $8,400. It was shipped to Europe for veneer.
Trimmed Burls The burls are trimmed near Sacramento, CA. About 4 inches from the top is removed and 8 inched from the bottom. They are then shipped to Europe where they are sliced paper thin into veneer. The wood is used for dishes or exotic cars and fine furniture. An average purl produces 3,000 sq. ft. of veneer worth about $30 per sq. ft.
